Our success in education

In 2014, SOPISDEW saw the need to transform the society (oku community) through a holistic form of education involving spiritual, mental and physical welfare, that will see the centre growing into a sphere of hope to the hopeless. The aim was to bring out the potential skills and knowledge in the young people, to be used in our country and the world at large in order to quench the thirst for education in the children for a better tomorrow and to support sustainable development efforts.

The fact that Children living in rural communities in Cameroon face a number of problems which include:lack of study space for (underprivileged) children, no opportunity for education for out of school children, lack of sensitivity to emotional needs of these children, lack of interest in poor parents about the education of their children, lack of water and toilet facilities in schools and increase in child birth and maternal mortality due to ignorance. Profound poverty, competition for scarce resources, disease, conflict, addictions and lack of educational opportunities put these children at extreme risk for illiteracy, illness, hopelessness, abuse and the meagre resources accessible is the common definition of the poor child living in the poor villages in Oku. Few opportunities exist for the children of Oku and surrounding villages that allow them to learn and grow to their potential.

Although the Cameroonian government has announced free education for all children at primary school level, the children are still expected to pay tuition fees, buy their own uniforms (without a uniform they cannot attend school), provide their own food and in some cases there are not enough school desks and resources with children having class sizes of over 100 in a tiny room. This lack of opportunity results in a perpetuation of the poverty cycle, allowing them to neither contribute to their full capacity to the community nor be able to take advantage of all that their society and the world has to offer. It’s in light to this predicament that the CEWEC was founded to meet the need of the ever increasing need to meet the needs of these dear ones and give them the opportunity to live to their full potential and add value to humanity because children are the country’s greatest resource and represent hope for a better future.

All of these facts were glaring and the urge to push through this vision by SOPISDEW was inevitable. We saw the need for a holistic education; the organization was looking for the young people to mould their minds towards societal development, bridging the poverty gap and building an in discriminable society. Thus the creation of CEWEC.
